Key Achievement

Before

I'm a retired firefighter. 25 years on the job. I'd seen things that stayed with me long after I took the uniform off. I started drinking to quiet the images. When I retired, the drinking accelerated because the structure of the job was gone. My wife gave me an ultimatum. I chose her, but I didn't know how to choose myself.

The Turning Point

My daughter found Empower Recovery online and showed me the 28-Day Transformation page. She said, 'Dad, this one covers everything — emotional, mental, physical, spiritual. That's what you need. Not just one piece.' She was right. Every other program I'd tried focused on one dimension. But my pain wasn't in one dimension.

The Journey

Week 1 (Emotional) was the hardest thing I've done since the academy. The Grief Inventory asked me to name the losses I hadn't fully processed. I filled four pages. I didn't know I was carrying that much. Week 2 (Mental) taught me about cognitive distortions. I'd been catastrophizing for so long I thought it was just 'being realistic.' Learning that my brain had been lying to me — and that I could catch it in real-time — was like getting a new pair of glasses. Week 3 (Physical) reconnected me to my body. As a firefighter, I'd trained my body to ignore pain and push through. The Body Scan exercise showed me I was still doing that in retirement — ignoring every signal my body was sending. Week 4 (Spiritual) surprised me. I'm not a religious man. But the exercises didn't ask me to be. They asked me to connect to something larger than myself. For me, that turned out to be nature. I started walking in the woods every morning, and it became the anchor for everything else.

After

My wife says I'm a different person. I think she's right, but not in the way she means. I'm not different — I'm more myself than I've been in decades. I do the morning walk, the evening review, the daily affirmations. My granddaughter asked me last week why I talk to myself in the mirror every morning. I told her, 'Because the person in the mirror deserves to hear something kind.' She's five. She said, 'That's smart, Grandpa.'
