Key Achievement

Before

I'd been sober for 5 years when I found Empower Recovery. People would say, 'You're doing great!' and I'd smile and agree. But the truth was, I was still running the same mental patterns — the catastrophizing, the shame spirals, the constant internal criticism. I was sober, but I wasn't free. I was sponsoring other people in AA while my own inner dialogue was destroying me.

The Turning Point

My therapist suggested I look into positive self-talk programs specifically. She said, 'You've removed the substance, but you haven't replaced the thought patterns that led you there.' She was right. I'd been sober for five years but I'd never actually worked on the voice in my head.

The Journey

The 21-Day Breakthrough was perfectly structured for someone like me — someone who'd done the initial work but needed the next level. Week 1 (Awareness) was about pattern recognition. I mapped my habit loops and discovered something shocking: my 'sobriety routine' had become its own rigid pattern. I was doing the same things every day not because they served me, but because I was terrified of what would happen if I stopped. Week 2 (Rewiring) introduced the 3-Minute Rule. When a craving or negative thought hit, I'd commit to 3 minutes of a replacement behavior before deciding what to do. The neuroscience behind it made sense to my analytical brain: you're not fighting the old pathway, you're building a new one alongside it. Week 3 (Anchoring) was about identity. I stopped saying 'I'm in recovery' and started saying 'I've recovered.' That shift — from ongoing struggle to completed transformation — changed everything about how I moved through the world.

After

I'm still a sponsor in AA, but now I bring the 369 tools to my sponsees. The combination of traditional recovery support plus the self-talk and neuroplasticity work from this program has been transformative — not just for me, but for the people I guide. I finally feel like I'm not just surviving sobriety. I'm thriving in it.
